Rehman's Hidden Gems - Introduction

AR Rehman's music has enthralled people world over for more than 15 years now. Right from his first official soundtrack for Mani Ratnam's Roja to his latest work of genius for Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar, Rehman has proved himself time and again as the most versatile and probably the greatest composer of modern India. After all he has been rightly labelled as the 'Mozart of Asia'. I am a big fan of Mr. Rehman and whatever knowledge and understanding I have garnered about music has been possible only because of him. What amazes me about Mr. Rehman is his simplicity and humility and the way in which he lets his work speak for himself. I wanted to write about his works for a long time now. Now that I've finally decided to pen down a few words, I will in a series of posts (titled 'Rehman's Hidden Gems') write about those compositions of Rehman which despite being brilliant didn't really catch the attention of the larger audience due to the film associated with it not doing well at the box office or for various other reasons.

Till then grab a copy of The Lord of the Rings Musical audio CD composed by AR Rehman and Varttina (I will write a report on the music score soon). I watched this show in London West End on the opening night last year and believe me, the music is nothing short of brilliant, the best of the lot is the Lothlorien track (Galadriel, Legolas and the Ensemble cast)!
